For them the mmo gameplay is the point, for players more like me the strong narrative underpinning is the point. I’ve talked to people in my fc who have no idea who some of the major npcs are because they skip everything they can and don’t read the rest. The fact that SE managed to create an mmo that people who don’t like mmos want to keep playing is a pretty big achievement imo.īut all of that seems pretty incomprehensible to a serious mmo player. I tried it again with ShB and took nearly 500 hours just getting through MSQ, exploring different side quests and areas, trying different jobs, doing all the old raid content and whatnot as I went. If not for the strength of the MSQ this game would be like every other mmo I’ve tried-something that gets a few dozen hours at most before I say “eh this just isn’t for me.” When I first tried the game when HW came out, it just didn’t click. I’ve never been a fan of the mmo gameplay loop, but I love the world and characters of Eorzea. Those two groups tend to want different things and FF is really unique in that it manages to offer both. It attracts mmo players like my younger brother and longtime jrpg players like myself. It’s kind of the natural result of the weird market niche SE has placed this game in.
